The new Kiser Middle School provided an opportunity to shape a comprehensive campus-wide facility plan within a site that supports all K–12 levels of learning, recreation, athletics, and daily community use. These existing conditions required careful consideration of circulation patterns, including the coordination of pedestrian, vehicular, and service movements occurring at multiple times throughout the day. Working in association with Corgan, GVSA led a series of site analyses to determine the optimal location for the new school while repositioning key campus elements to improve safety, accessibility, and long-term functionality. In response to Guilford County Schools’ vision and programmatic goals, the new Kiser Middle School was designed as a flexible, future-ready learning environment that supports a variety of teaching styles and student experiences. The school was designed with student wellness and engagement in mind. As an intentional inclusive school learning environments expand beyond the classroom. Adaptable teaching labs, maker spaces, science labs, 2D and 3D arts spaces, and lyceum-style learning environments that encourage student centered learning through collaboration and exploration. An open commons area anchored by learning stairs creates opportunities for gathering, presentations, and informal learning throughout the day. Outdoor learning environments further extend the educational experience, including a student quad, science courtyard, amphitheater, and teaching gardens. Together, these elements support a dynamic and engaging campus environment designed to evolve alongside the needs of students, educators, and the surrounding community.
