Northyards Business Park represents the adaptive reuse of a historic railway substation into a modern office campus anchored by The Roundhouse, a National Historic Landmark originally designed to support a rail-car turntable. The project preserved the site’s industrial character while introducing contemporary architectural elements including large frameless windows, glass railings, and structural flying canopies that bring daylight deep into interior spaces. Due to the age of the existing structures and limited original documentation, the design team conducted extensive field verification and as-built documentation to guide the rehabilitation process. Preservation work followed National Park Service standards and included structural stabilization, masonry restoration, and replication of historic window systems. The transformation resulted in approximately 275,000 square feet of office space and received the 2002 Atlanta Urban Design Commission Award of Excellence.
