The Concourse D Widening project at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is one of the largest aviation infrastructure improvements currently underway at the airport. GVSA is serving as a joint venture architectural partner alongside Corgan to expand and modernize the existing concourse while maintaining continuous airport operations. Originally constructed decades ago, Concourse D was designed at a width of approximately 60 feet. The project expands the concourse to approximately 99 feet, significantly improving passenger circulation, gate areas, and overall operational efficiency. The expansion introduces new passenger amenities, upgraded gate hold rooms, expanded restroom facilities, and improved concessions areas. The design also includes modernization of building systems, infrastructure upgrades, and enhanced wayfinding elements that improve the overall passenger experience. Due to the operational complexity of construction within an active airport terminal, the project incorporates a modular construction strategy using self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs). This approach allows large prefabricated sections of the concourse to be installed with minimal disruption to ongoing airport operations. When complete, the project will add more than 200,000 square feet of new space while also renovating existing areas. The improvements will enhance passenger comfort, improve operational efficiency for airlines, and support the continued growth of the world’s busiest airport.
