The Mary Schmidt Campbell Center for Innovation & the Arts at Spelman College is a much anticipated and long-awaited transformative academic and cultural facility designed to foster interdisciplinary collaboration between the arts, technology, and academic programs. GVSA served as Associate Architect working with Studio Gang as the design architect for the project. The 82,500-square-foot facility provides a dynamic environment for creative exploration and academic engagement. The building includes classrooms, performance venues, studios, galleries, collaborative learning spaces, and interdisciplinary labs designed to support both artistic expression and innovation. A central feature of the building is the Arthur M. Blank Innovation Lab, a flexible maker space where students from across the college collaborate using advanced fabrication tools and technology. Another key gathering space is the Forum, an open presentation environment designed to host performances, critiques, and collaborative discussions. The design emphasizes transparency, natural light, and connectivity between spaces to encourage interaction among students and faculty. Public-facing spaces including galleries, performance venues, and community gathering areas strengthen the relationship between the college and the surrounding Atlanta community. Sustainability was also a central design consideration. The building incorporates energy-efficient systems, sun-shading elements, and carefully integrated natural lighting strategies that reduce energy consumption while enhancing interior comfort. The Center stands as a landmark addition to Spelman’s campus and supports the institution’s commitment to creative innovation, academic excellence, and community engagement.
